DERMABOND ADVANCED™ Topical Skin Adhesive
Wound Strength and Protection
DERMABOND ADVANCED™ provides a secure wound closure and a protective microbial barrier over the wound.1
DERMABOND ADVANCED™ enhances wound closure when used in addition to sutures. It has been clinically shown to provide 7 days of wound holding strength in just minutes.2 DERMABOND ADVANCED™ has also been shown in vitro to provide a microbial barrier that offers greater than 99% protection for 72 hours against the organisms most commonly associated with SSIs.*3
Though introduced for its use as skin closure device in operating and emergency room settings, DERMABOND ADVANCED™ also acts as a protective layer over a sutured wound, and therefore increases wound protection following closure of surgical incisions.1 DERMABOND ADVANCED™ forms its own protective barrier over the wound, eliminating the need for additional dressings.1,5
Therefore, when used with sutures, DERMABOND ADVANCED™ was shown ex vivo to add 75% more strength to the wound closure than sutures alone.4
Added Satisfaction for Your Patients
DERMABOND ADVANCED™ has been associated with excellent cosmesis, which can enhance overall patient satisfaction.1,6 In addition, because DERMABOND ADVANCED™ provides an occlusive barrier and does not require additional dressings, it may help minimize patient discomfort and remove the need for additional dressings.7
The unique design and patented formulation of DERMABOND ADVANCED™ has been shown to significantly improve patient comfort and satisfaction. In one study, patients rated their experienced scar comfort significantly greater at 6 weeks and 6 months versus suture alone. This included patient ratings of pain, itchiness, stiffness, scar irregularity, discoloration and irregular scar thickness.1,6
In addition, the application of DERMABOND ADVANCED™ used with or without suture, creates a moist wound environment. Moist wound environments are critical to reepithelialization — demonstrating up to 50% increased reepithelialization vs. non-moist environments.7
Indications
DERMABOND ADVANCED™ is intended for topical application only to hold closed easily approximated skin edges of wounds from surgical incisions, including punctures from minimally invasive surgery, and simple, thoroughly cleansed, trauma-induced lacerations. DERMABOND ADVANCED™ may be used in conjunction with, but not in place of, deep dermal stitches.8
Effectiveness and Safety
DERMABOND ADVANCED™ is a safe and effective means of wound closure. Its unique, patented 2-octyl cyanoacrylate formula contains plasticizers and an initiator. The initiator provides a consistent setting time in different conditions. Plasticizers increase flexibility and aid patient comfort.
PRECAUTIONS
- Do not apply liquid or ointment medications or other substances to the wound after closure with DERMABOND ADVANCED™, as these substances can weaken the polymerized film and allow for skin edge separation. Prior to application, cleanse the application site thoroughly to remove any remaining topical medications/anesthetics.
- DERMABOND ADVANCED™, as a liquid, is syrup-like in viscosity. To prevent inadvertent flow of liquid DERMABOND ADVANCED™ to unintended areas, the wound should be maintained in a horizontal position, with DERMABOND ADVANCED™ applied from above.
- DERMABOND ADVANCED™ should be used immediately after crushing ampoule because the adhesive will polymerize in the applicator, rendering the device unusable.
- If unintended bonding of intact skin occurs, peel the adhesive from the skin, but do not pull the skin edges apart. Petroleum jelly or acetone may help loosen the bond. Other agents such as water, saline, or soap are not expected to immediately loosen the bond.
